Why Hot-Dip Galvanised Beats Painted Steel for Water Truck Tanks

Every GTS water truck tank is hot-dip galvanised, inside and out. It’s not a premium add-on – it’s the baseline, because painted steel tanks are a problem waiting to happen on a water truck.

Painted tanks rust from the inside out. Water trucks hold water, constantly, which is exactly the environment that attacks painted steel. Once moisture gets under a coating – through a stone chip, a weld seam, a scratch from loading gear — corrosion starts underneath where you can’t see it or treat it. By the time rust shows on the surface, it’s already eaten into the steel.

Hot-dip galvanising is a different process, not just a different coating. The steel is fully immersed in molten zinc, bonding a protective layer to every surface – inside the tank, outside the tank, welds and all. There’s no painted film to chip or peel, and no hidden surface left unprotected. That’s the difference between a tank that needs repainting in a few years and one that doesn’t.

It protects your resale value, not just your tank. A rusted, repainted water truck is an obvious red flag to any buyer doing a pre-purchase inspection. A hot-dip galvanised tank keeps its condition – and your asking price – for the life of the truck.

It’s also why GTS trucks carry more water. Higher-strength, better-engineered galvanised steel lets us build tanks with less tare weight for the same capacity – which is how our 14,000L water trucks carry around 10% more usable water than comparable trucks, within legal limits. The galvanising isn’t just about corrosion protection; it’s part of why the whole truck is lighter and more efficient.

If a water truck quote doesn’t mention hot-dip galvanising, ask why —-it’s the difference between buying a tank for the job and buying a tank for the next ten years.
